Nicolas Maline, branded Vuillaume a Paris

Nicolas Maline is considered one of the truly great makers of the classical French period. He was the son and pupil of Guillaume Maline, working alongside Maire and Pajeot. A great deal of his work was for J.B. Vuillaume, although he probably mostly worked in Mirecourt.

François Lotte, branded Ch. Husson a Paris

Born in Mirecourt, François Lotte was the son of violin maker Gorges Lotte and apprenticed with Charles Nicolas Bazin. He worked with Eugène Cuniot-Hury before setting up his own workshop in 1926. His workshop became well-known and respected. He made fine bows under his own name as well as for other makers and dealers.

Benoit Rolland

Benoit Rolland is one of the finest bow makers working today. Growing up in a highly musical family he began playing the piano later switching to the violin which he studied at the Paris Conservatory. In 1971 he began studying bow making with Bernard Ouchard in Mirecourt. In 1976 he opened his own workshop in Paris. His shop was frequented by many of the most important string musicians. In 2001, he and his wife relocated to Boston. His bows are in demand and can be difficult to find.

Derwent Angier

Derwent Angier began his violin making career in the 1950's while still in the U.S. Navy. He continued making while teaching high school music. He established his own successful violin shop in Rochester, New York, in 1973. He moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1983, working with The Guarneri House. Born in Norway in 1865, Jacob Lundh came to the U.S. in 1882. He moved to Minneapolis in 1910, making violins for a large music store. He then set up his own violin shop (Lundh & Rohe) in 1927. Over his long career he made over 400 violins.
