Bass

All outfits include bow, rosin, and case (soft bag for cellos and basses). If you are not sure which size is right for you, we will help you to figure it out. Please start by checking our sizing guide above.

Notes on models:

“Student” instruments are of various makes, including Suzuki, Becker, and others. Some of the cellos are of plywood, as are the least expensive basses. We set them up well, and they are easy to play. However, their tone quality is limited. These instruments are set up with steel strings, such as D’Addario Prelude, and are good for starting out or for school use.

Jay Haide 101: This model is made completely by hand, of finer wood, with attention to detail, giving these instruments a very resonant quality. The violins and violas are set up with good quality synthetic core strings and the cellos are set up with steel core strings of appropriate quality. These instruments are suitable for players of all levels who seek a better tone.

Jay Haide á l'ancienne: This is our finest model in the rental department; these instruments have an especially nice tone and are suitable for more advanced players. The varnish has been antiqued and the wood has been very well chosen for its sound qualities. We often rent these to professional musicians who need a second instrument.

We encourage any student interested in renting an instrument from Ifshin Violin Rentals to call ahead of time so we may hold an instrument for you. We are also happy to help you with sizing.

The process we use at Ifshin Violins to size for violin and viola is to measure the player's outstretched arm from neck to mid palm. This simulates holding the violin under one's chin with the scroll resting in the palm of the hand. Below is the size breakdown according to this method. Calling ahead with this measurement will ensure that we have the appropriate instruments ready for you, though we always check the fit if the student comes into the shop. Violins

Violas

Viola sizes at Ifshin Violins are determined by the length of the back of the viola in inches (excluding the neck button). Any student measuring less than 21" from neck to palm may request a violin of the proper size strung as a viola.

Cellos

We have not yet found a successful method for cello sizing without seeing the student in person. However, please call ahead, since age and height (or your teacher's recommendations) will help to estimate the size the student may need.

We offer cellos in sizes from 1/10 to 4/4. Please note that we have two options available in the 1/2 cello:

• small 1/2: 24" back (measured from button to endpin)
• large 1/2: 26" back
