Tom Croen has been one of the most respected violin makers in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Born in New York City, he studied the history of the violin at Allegheny College. In 1977 he left college and studied at the Violin Making School of America with Paul Hart and Chris DeGroot. After graduation in 1980 he came to San Francisco working for Rolland Feller for two years. He opened his own workshop and quickly became one of the most respected violin makers in the Bay Area. In 1984 and 1986 he won three gold medals at the prestigious Violin Society of America competitions with the title of “Hors Concours” and has been a workmanship judge at VSA competitions. As a recognized expert on violin acoustics, he has written a number of articles on the subject.
