The Knöpf Family of violin and bow makers spanned three generations. H.R. Knöpf was both a fine bow maker and a master luthier.  Born in 1860, he studied bow making with his father, the great Heinrich and violin making with Ludwig Bausch. He was only 19 when he emigrated to America, first working with John Albert in Philadelphia but soon moving to New York to set up his own shop at only 20 years old. He had a wildly successful career! Both Victor Herbert and Maud Powell were regular customers. He also had a thriving business with agents selling his instruments all over the country.
