C.W.Knopf (1767-1837) was the founding father of the Knopf bow making dynasty which continued on until the death of “Henry” Knopf in 1939 who spent all of his career in New York. Christian Knopf was heralded in his own time as the “German Tourte”. In fact his work was strongly influenced by both Tourte and John Dodd. This Beautiful bow with elaborate inlays in the frog and handle is often seen in his work. In fact in the Grünke book on German bowmakers, all of the several examples shown By C.W.Knopf are in this style. This exceptional bow had belonged to the great cellist Leonard Rose one of the greatest 20th Century cellists.  It is accompanied with certificate of authenticity from Salchow, New York.
