Heinrich Theodor Heberlein founded the Heberlein company in 1863, producing extremity high quality instruments over several decades. This fine violin is an excellent example oftheir fine work.

Paul Schuback

Paul Schuback, one of the most respected violin makers in America, opened his shop in Portland, OR in 1971. Over the years he trained a number of fine makers in his shop. Among those was Jeffrey Muller, son of Albert Muller, who went on to open his own successful shop in Los Angeles.

Nicolaus Uhlen

Nicolaus Uhlen was born and trained in Germany. He came to the U.S. in the mid 1880’s, working first in New York, then moving to Chicago in 1893. At that time there were many fine violin makers in Chicago, mostly immigrants from Germany and Eastern Europe.

The firm of Neuner & Hornsteiner was begun at the beginning of the 19th century by Mathias Neuner and Cantius Hornsteiner, continuing through much of the 20th century.  By the latter 19th century it had grown to become one of the largest and most respected firms in Germany.

After training with several important makers in his native Germany, John Friedrich emigrated to New York in 1883, setting up his own shop with his brother William. He employed a number of highly skilled makers and went on to win a number of awards and medals for his instruments.

The Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy (JTL) workshop produced fine string instruments for several decades. Starting in he mid 19th. century. This violin is an unusually nice example of their work.

James Reynold Carlisle

Carlisle made his first violin in 1910 and by 1914 he was associated with Rudolf Wurlitzer in Cincinnati. In the first part of the 20th century, Wurlitzer was one of the largest musical instrument dealers in the world with several locations around the country and were one of the most important violin dealers in the U.S.  Carlisle made a number of fine violins for them over many years. This is an especially nice example of his work.

Auguste Delivet

Like so many French makers, Delivet apprenticed in Mirecourt. After working there with Victor Rambaux, he moved to Paris working with H.C.Silvestre. He opened his own shop in Paris in 1892. His work was highly regarded and he won numerous gold medals in major exhibitions. In 1918 he emigrated to Canada working in Toronto and Montreal. This violin has a nice brilliant and responsive tone.

This beautifully made German violin bears a facsimile Stradivarius label but is clearly very much in the style of the best work from the Ernst Heinrich Roth workshop in Markneukirchen.

The Gustav August Ficker instruments were made for William Lewis & Sons of Chicago, one of the largest and most important violin shops in the U.S.  They opened in the 1890’s and continued for almost a century. The Ficker violins, violas and cellos were always of the highest quality and always in demand.

Fine old French

In the late 19th. And early twentieth centuries, there were a number of excellent workshops in Mirecourt. This violin probably dates from the early twentieth century.

M. Willibald Schmidt

Max Willibald Schmidt was born and trained in Markneukirchen but came to America in 1913 during the great migration. He established his shop in San Francisco where he worked for a number of years before moving to Seattle.

P.A.Peterson worked in Chicago from 1875-1907. Although we don’t know a great deal about this maker, it is clear from our violin that he was a well trained and skillful craftsman.
