Julius Gigli was apprenticed to Michael Platner in 1738 at the age of 14 and was successor in 1753. He was one of the most respected makers of the Roman school. Roman violins of that era had a distinct style, strongly influenced by David Tecchler (1666-1747) who was originally from Germany. They characteristiclly have a big, powerful, brilliant tone. Gigli's instruments are rare and highly sought after.
The tone quality is truly wonderful. It's big with marvelous overtones. An absolute joy to play.
