Jay Haide l'ancienne Standard Model with Asian Wood

sku Product SKU:  301VLN

Since its introduction, the à l'ancienne violins have become the flagship of the Jay Haide fleet. They are envied and copied by other makers, but as much as they have tried, none have come close to equaling them. Some have gone so far as to put facsimile labels of well known French and Italian makers in our instruments and selling them at much inflated prices. One of our ancienne violins even was given a certificate of authenticity from a well-known expert as an early 20th. century Italian violin with an insurance appraisal for $26,000.00! Because of this, every one of the à l'ancienne violin, viola, cello and bass now has a series of brands inside and out to deter the copyists.

With use and playing, fine old string instruments develop the patina of age over the decades and centuries that master violin makers have attempted to emulate, even as early as the late 17th century. By the mid 19th century, makers like Jean Baptiste Vuillaume and Georges Chanot in Paris had developed a high degree of skill in re-creating the effects of time and use in his violins. In following that tradition, each Jay Haide l'ancienne is carefully and painstakingly hand varnished to emulate the appearance of a fine old Stradivari or Guarneri violin. First we re-create the color, texture and patina of the golden ground coat. To that we add our beautiful golden orange varnish in a pattern simulating the wear and use found in the great classic old instruments. In order to do that. we have provided our luthiers with fine old Italian and French so that they can be studied while they are working. It is this attention to detail that has made our ancienne instruments in demand around the world.

Jay Haide à l'ancienne violins are available in Stradivari, Guarneri, Guadagnini and Balestrieri patterns. The Special Model is made with European wood.

Jay Haide J.B. Vuillaume Model with European Wood
303VCEL

The elegant style of Vuillaume’s instruments has inspired us to create a new model in his honor. Using European wood, the violins are based on his Guarneri model violin, the cello on his Strad pattern. The varnish imitates his unique lustrous golden hue. The tone is powerful, easily producing colors from the entire spectrum.

W.D. Watson
19747

One of the first apprentices hired by the Hill family after WWII, Watson started in the case making department before the renowned Bultitude transferred him to the bowmaking department. Once there, he started a 6 year apprenticeship under the great William Retford. This close working relationship benefitted Watson immensely, becoming one of the best bowmakers at Hill & Sons. In 1962, already the senior bowmaker at Hill, Watson resigned because of a payment dispute, and set up on his own. He continued to make bows until the end of his life. Eugene Sartory *SOLD*
18940

Sartory is arguably the greatest bowmaker of the 20th century. He began his training with Charles Peccatte, later working with Alfred Lamy, who greatly inspired his work.   Sartory set up on his own in 1889, already having established a reputation as an excellent maker among his peers. Even before World War I his reputation had grown so much that he hired several assistants, including Hermann Prell and Otto Hoyer. After the Great War he hired as assistants such fine archetiers as Jules Fetique, Louis Morizot, and Louis Gillet. By having such fine assistants, he was able produce bows to satisfy the ever growing demand for his work, always finishing and perfecting the bows personally. This viola bow is an excellent example of his work, and belonged to the longtime principal violist of the San Francisco Symphony and later the Takacs Quartet, Geraldine Walther. It draws a rich and colorful tone, and is exceptionally easy to handle, facilitating all the technical demands of a world-class violist. It is accompanied by a Raffin certificate.

Arcus P5
ARCUS-P-VLN

The Arcus high-density carbon fiber stick is 10 times stronger than a traditional wood bow and also immune to changes in humidity. Its surface is scratch-proof. These bows will never bend or lose their camber. The metal bearings protect the stick against the screw and ensure its ease of function. Arucs offers a 30 year warranty for the stick.

Weighing around 53 grams, the P-bows are Arcus's heaviest violin bows. They are still much lighter than wooden bows of 19th centuries design and thus notably more comfortable and easier to play. Their sound is more on the dark side, which is why they are a perfect fit to bright sounding instruments. The resiliency (or elasticity) of the stick is perfectly matched with the best modern strings, which allows to make the best use of them under all circumstances. The P-bows work well with every repertoire but they excel in playing the big violin concertos of the Romantic era. This stick is round and silver-mounted.
