Cello/piano Sonata for Violoncello and Piano. Composed by Claude Debussy (1862-1918). Edited by Regina Back. Urtext edition. Playing score with critical commentary. 22/7 pages.
Debussy's Sonate pour violoncelle et piano was composed in the summer of 1915. It was the first of a planned set of six sonatas for various instrumental combinations of which Debussy only completed three. Imbued with that unmistakable Debussy charm this work has remained a standard in the repertoire since the premiere. It is without question the most performed cello sonata of the 20th century.
Regina Back's Urtext edition for the first time makes use of Debussy's sketches held in a private collection which contain not only an important comment by Debussy regarding the balance of the instruments but also clarify several musical ambiguities found in the autograph and first edition.Barenreiter's new Urtext edition comes with a detailed preface (German/English/French) elaborating not only on the genesis of the composition and its first performances but also providing performance practice information. The edition is rounded off with a facsimile and a Critical Commentary (English).

Dounis was one of the most prominent violin pedagogues of the twentieth century. He was revered for his intense concern for the proper ergonomics of violin playing as well as the emphasis on the role of the brain, not just the fingers in appropriate violin practicing and playing. The eleven books that make up this anthology are the most comprehensive collection ever published of this master's works. It includes clearly edited material as well as content that have not been in print for decades. This 290-page book features an insightful foreword to help string players understand the master's approach as well as to give the reader a historical perspective. A must for the serious violin player!

Composed by Cesar Auguste Franck (1822-1890). Edited by Douglas Woodfull-Harris. Arranged by Douglas Woodfull-Harris. 31 x 24.3 cm inches. Text language: English, German, French. Introduction by Gudula Schutz.
Cesar Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the violin repertoire, a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugene Ysaye.
After Franck's death in 1890 the original publisher of the Sonata, the Parisian house Julien Hamelle, announced an arrangement of the work for viola, but it has not been possible to locate any copy of this publication. The present arrangement for viola is largely based on Jules Delsart's arrangement for piano and cello, the only version of the Sonata which the composer authorized. However, the viola part here also adopts extensive passages in their original register or remains in the middle octave, especially in those passages where the cello lies two octaves beneath the violin. Being set in the alto register, the part thus lies between the other two string versions, lending the Sonata a delightful hybrid hue beyond the brilliance of the violin and the sonorousness of the cello. The piano part has been left intact and is thus identical to that of the original version. The edition is rounded off by an informative text on the genesis and reception history of the Sonata.
Years in preparation, In 27 Pieces: the Hilary Hahn Encores presents the 27 works from 27 composers written for the 2013 recording of the same title. The publication has been closely edited by Hilary Hahn. Ms. Hahn writes, “I was intrigued by the future of the genre and how composers might wish to redefine the form. When I pictured a novel set of favorite miniatures catching on – pieces crafted by today's minds – the idea of a commissioned-encores project planted itself in my head.” Twenty-six composers of various ages and nationalities agreed to create pieces for the project, following the guidelines set forth. “I gave them two parameters: each piece should be under five minutes and for acoustic violin and piano.” The twenty-seventh work came from a competition, with more than four hundred entries which were reviewed by Ms. Hahn through a blind process before one piece was chosen. “Every one of these encores was fresh, free of interpretive tradition, and each spoke a different language. My initial process was full of trial and error. I broke down techniques and phrases until I understood them on the most fundamental levels. Often, I was pushed well past my limits. As the music came into its own, however, the pieces metamorphosed into brilliant, powerful, scintillating, beautiful works of art. They compelled me to discover new layers of expression.” Included are composer biographies and commentary from each composer about her or his encore.
