Bach, 3 Sonatas & 3 Partitas for Solo Violin, BWV 1001-1006

sku Product SKU:  BA5256

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Edited by Gunter Hausswald. Urtext edition. Baroque. Violin solo book. With introductory text. BWV 1001-1006. 60 pages. 9x12 inches. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag.

Contents:

  • Sonata 1, BWV 1001 G Minor
  • Partita 1, BWV 1002 B Minor
  • Sonata 2, BWV 1003 A Minor
  • Partita 2, BWV 1004 D Minor
  • Sonata 3, BWV 1005 C Major
  • Partita 3, BWV 1006 E Major

Without any doubt J.S. Bach’s cycle of the three Sonatas and Partitas BWV 1001-1006 represents one of the pinnacles of classical European music. According to C.P.E. Bach a contemporary voice stated that there was „nothing more accomplished in order to become a good violinist“ than his father’s works. The cycle reflects the entire harmonic and polyphonic musical universe of Bach’s time, so masterfully composed that it can be rendered within the limited framework of but a single instrument – the violin.

The new publication of the Sonatas and Partitas BWV 1001-1006 (BA 5256) constitutes a complete revision of our older edition (BA 5116). The musical text has been edited by Peter Wollny and represents the most up-to-date state of research as published in the New Bach Edition – Revised (NBArev), volume BA 5937-01. The edition is mainly based on Bach’s unusually clear autograph which is considered among the most beautiful manuscripts by the composer. All relevant secondary sources have been taken into consideration in order to clarify ambiguities. These include five contemporary copies, including one by Anna Magdalena Bach, and four manuscripts from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The musical text has been newly engraved with a clear and generous layout, whereby page turns and pagination have been retained from the previous edition. This allows the straightforward navigation between a copy of the previous and this new edition. The detailed Preface (Ger/Eng) provides information on the genesis of the Sonatas and Partitas, their context and the sources.

Franck: Violin Sonata arranged for Viola and Piano

sku Product SKU:  BA10918

Composed by Cesar Auguste Franck (1822-1890). Edited by Douglas Woodfull-Harris. Arranged by Douglas Woodfull-Harris. 31 x 24.3 cm inches. Text language: English, German, French. Introduction by Gudula Schutz.

Cesar Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the violin repertoire, a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugene Ysaye.

After Franck's death in 1890 the original publisher of the Sonata, the Parisian house Julien Hamelle, announced an arrangement of the work for viola, but it has not been possible to locate any copy of this publication. The present arrangement for viola is largely based on Jules Delsart's arrangement for piano and cello, the only version of the Sonata which the composer authorized. However, the viola part here also adopts extensive passages in their original register or remains in the middle octave, especially in those passages where the cello lies two octaves beneath the violin. Being set in the alto register, the part thus lies between the other two string versions, lending the Sonata a delightful hybrid hue beyond the brilliance of the violin and the sonorousness of the cello. The piano part has been left intact and is thus identical to that of the original version. The edition is rounded off by an informative text on the genesis and reception history of the Sonata.
