Georges Chanot along with Jean Baptiste Vuillaume is considered among the finest of the 19th century Parisian violin makers. Born in Mirecourt in 1801, Georges trained with his father, Joseph, then moving to Paris at age 18. He worked with several makers including his brother François but soon opened his own workshop in 1823. He soon became very successful. He also traveled a great deal gaining knowledge from makers all over Europe. He was highly respected not only as a maker, but also as an expert in fine old violins.
Like this fine instrument, his most prized violins are the Guarneri copies.
