A highly prolific maker of superb quality bows, Vigneron apprenticed with Claude Nicolas Husson before working with Jean Joseph Martin. This early training from some of the finest archetiers in France helped propel his career. From about 1880 he worked for the important firm, Gand & Bernardel Frers, further developing his career. He set up on his own around 1888. The strong, dense stick is ideal for the high level violinist. It is quick and responsive, and draws a sweet, clear tone that projects. It is accompanied by a Raffin certificate.

Andre Richaume

One of the finest bowmakers of the 20th century, Richaume spent his entire life surrounded by fine bows and brilliant bowmakers. He began his training under Emile F. Ouchard, working alongside another great young bowmaker, Emile A. Ouchard. He worked with his uncle, Jules Fetique, who worked with Sartory for many years. He also spent five years working with another uncle, the great Victor Fetique, before setting up on his own in 1932. Over the course of his prolific career he produced 1,000 silver and ebony bows of fabulous quality. This violin bow is an excellent example of his work: strong, precise, and dependable, it facilitates the performer's artistic endeavors. It is accompanied by a Raffin certificate.

JJ Millant

One of the finest archetiers after World War II, Jean-Jacques Millant studied with the Morizot family from 1946-1948 before working with his father and uncle, Roger and Max Millant. Setting up on his own in 1950, Millant developed a fine reputation, eventually being awarded the title of “One of the Best Craftsmen of France” in 1970. Around 1980 he only made bows mounted in ebony and gold. This is a great playing bow, strong and lithe, a classic example of his excellent work.

Victor Fetique/ Emile A. Ouchard *SOLD*

Victor Fetique was an exceptionally talented bowmaker, and winner of the coveted prize, "One of the Best Crafsmen of France". Originally from Mirecourt, he apprenticed with the Husson family and Charles Nicolas Bazin, before working with the newly opened Parisian firm, Caressa & Francais, in 1901. While there he worked side by side with another great archetier, Claude Thomassin. By 1913 he set up his own shop and before long started supplying large numbers of bows to the musical community of Paris, and beyond. Aside from making bows personally, he finished bows supplied to him by various bowmakers. This particular bow was made by E.A. Ouchard and finished by Fetique, an unusual collaboration by two of the centuries' greatest makers. The bow is strong and flexible, with a rich, ringing projection.

Louis Gillet*SOLD*

Louis Gillet (born 1891) apprenticed with Thibouville-lamy in Mirecourt and worked there as a bow maker until WW1. After the war he joined the Laberte firm until 1926 when he set up his workshop at Châlon-sur-Saône. He worked with Eugene Sartory in Paris for 12 years, adopting his style. His bows have always been highly regarded, often in the style of Sartory.

François Peccatte Workshop

François Peccatte, younger brother of Dominique, worked with his brother and for a period for J.B. Vuillaume in Paris. His work in many ways resembles that of his older brother. Unfortunately he had a short career, dying at age 34. This fine bow has an open trench ebony frog. It produces a wonderful, full rich tone.

Louis Bazin

The Bazin family of bow makers spanned five generations. All of whom made very fine bows. Charles Louis was the son and student of Charles Nicolas. He took over the family business in 1907 but his father stayed on until his death in 1915. Under Louis’s leadership his workshop was able to employ some of the best French bow makers. Many experts feel that the Louis Bazin bows were the finest of the Bazin family.

Bernard Ouchard for Vidoudez *SOLD*

Bernard was the son and pupil of the great Emile A. Ouchard. After working with his father and serving in the French army, Bernard became the bow maker for the Vidoudez, Geneva in 1949 and continued to make exceptional bows there until 1971 when he moved to Mirecourt and became the first professor of bow making at the Mirecourt School of Lutherie. For the several years he was there, he was responsible for the continuing of the highest level of French bow making into the 21^st. century.  Among his students were Martin Devillers, Eric Grandchamp, Jean Grunberger, Pascal Lauxerrois, Jean Pascal Nehr, Benoit Rolland, Christophe Schaeffer, George Tepho and Stephane Thomachaut along with many other of the best contemporary French bow makers.

Along with John Dodd, James Tubbs was the most important maker in the history of English bow making. This bow is highly unusual in that both the head and the frog are beveled so that the hair makes greater contact with the strings giving the player more stability, producing a fuller, richer sound.

The Husson family of violin and bow makers was one of the largest in France. Mars Auguste worked first with his father Jean Baptiste before joining the workshops of Thibouville-Lamy and C.N. Bazin. In 1906 he went to Paris to work with Vigneron. He set up his own workshop in 1925 but he seems to have primarily made unbranded bows for others including Auguste Husson.

Charles Espey *SOLD*

Charles Husson

An excellent maker with a fairly short working period, Charles Husson began his training with his father in Mirecourt. In 1873 he moved to Paris to work at the Vuillaume shop before working with Voirin, and then Gand and Bernardel. He set up on his own around 1880, producing bows that were influenced by his master, Voirin, and his former classmate, Andre Vigneron. This bow is nimble and elegant, strong yet flexible, and produces a luscious tone. It is accompanied by a Raffin certificate.

J.P.Lauxerrois

Born in 1928, Jean Paul Lauxerrois served his apprenticeship with Marcel Vatelot in Paris and then in Mirecourt from 1947-1950 with François Lotte. He joined André Chardon’s workshop working with Marcel and Etienne Vatelot. He set up his own workshop in Paris in 1959, moving to Bordeaux in 1980. In the 1950’s and ‘60s, Jean Paul was one of the most important figures in the revival of the great tradition of  French bow making.

L.Morizot

Stamped E.Boulangeot a Lyon. Besides making bows branded with the family name, the Morizots also made bows for several dealers in France. Emile Boulangeot was the principal maker to the Lyon Conservatory and ordered bows to sell his customers. This is an excellent playing bow, with depth of tone and great clarity.

Born in Chicago, David Samuels moved to Israel where he worked with Amnon Weinstein. He then worked with Etienne Vatelot and Stéphane Thomachot in France and with Jacques Français in New York. He has since become one of the most important bow makers working today, His bows are in demand by musicians and collectors all over the world and has won 7 gold medals at VSA competitions. Bernard Ouchard, branded Vidoudez

Bernard Ouchard was an important figure in the history of 20^th century French bow making. He studied with his father, the great Emile Auguste, After service in the French military, he moved to Geneva as the bow maker for Vidoudez where he stayed for over 20 years. In 1971 he returned to his native France where he was the professor of bow making at the Mirecourt School of Lutherie. He taught many of the best French bow makers of the last 50 years. We’ve recently been very fortunate to have had several bows by this important maker.

Roy Quade *SOLD*

Canadian bow maker Roy Quade studied his craft with the great Bill Salchow and continued his work at the Oberlin workshops. He has become famous for his superb and detailed craftsmanship. He’s won four gold medals at VSA competitions and 15 other awards as well.
