Charles Espey has become one of the most important and respected bow makers in the U.S.  He has worked with Hans Bischofberger, Robert Shallock, David Saunders and Stefan Thomachot and has won gold medals at the Violin Society of America and at the Kassel International competition. Port Townsend is the home to a number of the best bow makers in the country.

Samuel Nemessanyi *SOLD*

Generally considered the finest of all Hungarian makers, Nemessanyi trained with J.B.Schweitzer and Thomas Zach before moving to Prague where he worked with A Sitt. He returned to Budapest in 1863.  He employed several distinguished pupils He was quite successful in his own time, even though he only made a relatively small number of instruments. This fine violin is an exceptionally fine and attractive example of Nemessany’s work with superb tonal qualities.

Alfeo Batelli 16 ½”

Born in Sienna, Italy in 1903, Alfeo Batelli studied with Valentino De Zorzi in Florence. He worked with Paoletti Vezio before establishing his own workshop in Florence. He emigrated to Chicago in 1947 working with Kagan & Gaines.  Two years later he moved to Los Angeles and spent the next thirteen years with Hans Weishaar where so many of the best west coast makers perfected their skills. He established his own shop in 1963. He became one of the most important and respected makers on the West Coast.

Florian Schneidt

Born in Munich, Florian studied viola performance and played in orchestras in the Netherlands. He studied bow making in the UK with several master makers. He has since moved to Boston where he continues to work with several important makers.

Bernard Ouchard for Vidoudez *SOLD*

Bernard was the son and pupil of the great Emile A. Ouchard. After working with his father and serving in the French army, Bernard became the bow maker for the Vidoudez, Geneva in 1949 and continued to make exceptional bows there until 1971 when he moved to Mirecourt and became the first professor of bow making at the Mirecourt School of Lutherie. For the several years he was there, he was responsible for the continuing of the highest level of French bow making into the 21st. century.  Among his students were Martin Devillers, Eric Grandchamp, Jean Grunberger, Pascal Lauxerrois, Jean Pascal Nehr, Benoit Rolland, Christophe Schaeffer, George Tepho and Stephane Thomachaut along with many other of the best contemporary French bow makers.

Since graduating from the school of violin making in Cremona in 1994, Daniele Tonarelli has distinguished himself in a number of competitions around the world. His instruments are modeled after the classic Cremonese masters. He uses a brilliant and transparent varnish, constructing his instruments with carefully selected materials and pays particular attention to their tonal qualities.

One of the finest luthiers working in Cremona today, Levaggi’s instruments are respected for their perfect workmanship and elegant tonal qualities. Before setting up his own workshop in the historic center of Cremona in 2001, he graduated from the Cremona School of Lutherie in 1984 where he studied with Vincenzo Bissolotti, among others. He then worked in Genoa with Carlson-Cacciatori-Neumann’s. He has won countless international prizes over the course of his career, and continues perfecting his craft. This viola was made with special wood from Jay Ifshin’s large stock, and was hand selected by Ifshin and Levaggi for aesthetic beauty and sonorous qualities. It is has a quick response and a smooth, sonorous tone.

Ada Quaranta’s instrument are in great demand because of their great quality. She studied at the Cremona school beginning in 1990 after receiving her diploma in violin performance. After graduation, she worked in some of the most important shops in Germany and France. She has won numerous awards for her work. We are pleased to be able to offer this fine example of her work.

Cavalazzi was a student of Domenico Veggi and established his workshop in the late 1920’s. A highly respected maker, he also did extensive research in varnish chemistry. This violin has a full, warm tone of great quality.

Luigi Villa 16 ½"

Luigi Villa was born in Pesano in 1919. He attended art school and became a sculptor, working in wood. He also began to study violin making on his own while still young. For ten years Villa worked with Pierro Parravicini in Bovisio, one of the most important violin makers of the 20th century, thus continuing the tradition handed down to Parravicini by his teacher, Romeo Antoniazzi. For the rest of his career Luigi Villa operated a violin shop, doing repairs and restorations as well as making fine new instruments.

A student of Constantine Celani and Giuseppe Ornati, Castelli won over a dozen prizes before passing away in 2003 at the age of 91. He worked in his native Ascoli Piceno, making over 200 violins, 70 violas, and 30 cellos. His workmanship is of the highest quality. This viola has a strong, rich tone and is very responsive.

Walter Barbiero

Barbiero was a conservatory trained violist, but was always interested in woodworking, even from an early age. He started bow making on his own but then trained with Christian Barthe, Alfredo Clementi and J.F. Refin. He opened his own shop in 1997 and his work has become popular with a number of important soloists.

Josef Gabriel

Josef Gabriel is one of the most respected makers in Germany today. He trained with Alfons Reidel. He opened his own shop in Erlangen in 1987. Since then he has won numerous awards including gold medals at the Violin Society of America and Mittenwald.

Otto A Hoyer

After the normal training in Germany, Otto Hoyer moved to Paris to work with the great Eugene Sartory. When he returned to Markneukirchen he set up his own shop. His best bows were stamped: O.A.HOYER PARISER often with the date.

Bernd Dölling

The Dölling family of bow makers spans four generations, covering over 125 years. Bernd Dölling apprenticed with his father Heinz passing his Master’s Exam in 1972. He opened his own workshop in 1985 and was joined by his son Michael. The Döllings are  are one of  the most respected bow making familys in Germany. This viola bow is exceptionally beautiful and is gold mounted. The gold mounted button has pearl eyes on each facet.

Cuniot-Hury

The Cuniot-Hury workshop was originally founded by Eugène Cuniot in the 1880’s who trained with his father Pierre. The workshop employed about ten master bowmakers and produced very high quality work. Eugène’s assistant was Emile François Ouchard who took over the workshop in 1910. His son Emile Auguste worked there until 1922. The nickel button is a later replacement making this bow an excellent value.

Heinrich Theodor Heberlein founded the Heberlein company in 1863, producing extremity high quality instruments over several decades. This fine violin is an excellent example oftheir fine work.

Our l'ancienne Special Model instruments are made with aged European tonewood producing a beautifully layered, rich sonority, whose depth and color is brought to life by its powerful resonance. They are handmade in our workshop by expert luthiers. 

The delicate flaming of the maple on the back of each instrument accentuates the richness and complexity of the auburn shades of our proprietary varnish carefully applied and beautifully antiqued giving each instrument the patina of age, so desired by both musicians and connoisseurs. They are as beautiful tonally as they are visually.

The Special Model cellos are available in the Strad model, Ruggieri model, or the wider bodied Montagnana model.
