This unusual and beautifully made violin was possibly modeled after instruments by Gaspard Duiffoprugcar (1514-1570), the first "French" instrument maker. It has a beautifully carved head of a bearded man and on the lower back is an inlaid marquetry Paris street scene. J.B.Vuillaume of Paris who besides being a great maker, was also an experienced trader/dealer in antique instruments, probably saw work by Duiffoprugcar, making some instruments in his style. Over the years Derazey made a number of violins on this model, some of which were reportedly purchased by Vuillaume, inserting his own label. This exceptional and distinctive violin has a big, responsive tone.
